In the 1980s, someone proposed the establishment of a technical committee system, which would organize representatives from various aspects to participate in technical symposiums, discuss and resolve disputes related to material specifications, testing procedures, and other aspects. The first IATM conference was held in Europe in 1882, during which a working committee was formed. At that time, the main focus was on researching and solving the problem of testing methods for steel and other materials.
In 1902, at the fifth annual meeting of the International Society for Testing and Materials, the American Society for Testing Materials declared its official independence. With the continuous expansion and development of its business scope, the center of the society's work is not only to research and develop material specifications and test method standards, but also to include the characteristics and performance standards of various materials, products, systems, service projects, as well as test methods, procedures and other standards.
In 1961, the organization changed its name to the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM).
